The Witness: Leon Schagrin

Born on October 30, 1926 in Poland, Leon Schagrin is one of the last surviving witnesses to the Holocaust. Captured in 1941 by Nazi forces, he endured the unimaginable.

He survived four successive concentration camps. He lost his entire immediate family at the Bełżec extermination camp. Bearing the camp number 61744, he lived to bear witness.

Co-founder of the Holocaust Survivors of South Florida, his story was meticulously documented by author Stephen Shooster in The Horse Adjutant: A Boy’s Life in the Holocaust. Now 99 years old, his testimony transforms from the page to the stage, ensuring his voice echoes for generations to come.
